House of the Dragon: A Game of Thrones Prequel
Concept and Development
Pre-Production
In summer 2016, George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series on which Game of Thrones is based, pitched the concept for House of the Dragon to HBO. The working title for the series was initially "The Dance of the Dragons".
Production
Season 1 of House of the Dragon premiered on August 21, 2022, with the episode "The Heirs of the Dragon". Season 2 premiered on June 16, 2023, with the episode "A Son for a Son".
Plot and Setting
House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before the War of the Five Kings, focusing on the Targaryen civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons". The series is based on Martin's book Fire & Blood.
