Speaker Hoyle's Position Under Scrutiny
Sir Lindsay Hoyle has served as Speaker of the House of Commons since 2019. However, the Scottish National Party (SNP) has recently announced that they believe he should no longer continue in this role.
SNP Calls for Hoyle's Removal
"The SNP has lost confidence in the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle," said Stephen Flynn, the party's Westminster leader. "We believe that he has not been impartial in his role and that he has not always acted in the best interests of the House."
Frontrunner for the Role
Hoyle was initially considered the frontrunner for the role of Speaker. As a Labour MP since 1997, he is seen as a kind of embodiment of the British constitution.
Challenges to Hoyle's Position
Hoyle's position as Speaker is now in jeopardy as some MPs are discussing forcing a vote on his leadership. This vote would take place through a secret ballot.
