What Your Urine Can Tell You About Your Health
Abnormal Urine Tests May Flag Kidney, Liver, Pancreas, or Heart Issues
Changes in Urine Color, Odor, or Clarity Can Indicate a Health Problem
Your urine is a mix of water, electrolytes, and waste that your kidneys filter out from your blood. A change in urine color, odor, or clarity that isn't due to foods or medicine could be caused by a health problem.
The color of your urine changes with your hydration level, but it may also change due to:
- Bladder infection
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Pancreas disease
- Heart disease
A urinalysis is a set of tests that looks at the appearance of your pee urine and checks for blood cells, bacteria, and other substances.
Your doctor may order a urinalysis to:
- Check for a urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Evaluate kidney function
- Monitor the effectiveness of treatment for a kidney or urinary tract problem
- Screen for certain diseases, such as diabetes or kidney disease
